WHITTIER, Calif. (April 1, 2016) — During this unit, teams of two to three students developed initial prototypes of their solar ovens. Teams revised and improved upon their plans over two weeks, as they experimented with different materials, additional solar panels, insulation, etc. Students documented their engineering processes over time to show how their original prototypes differed significantly from their final ovens. Some solar ovens reached temperatures exceeding 250 degrees! Students ended the cook-off challenge with s’mores cooked in their very own ovens and reflected upon their successes and challenges with the process and upon the relationship between this project and the larger context of sustainability.
