WHITTIER, Calif. (October 31, 2017) — On October 6, preschoolers and their families, Broadoaks faculty and staff, Whittier College faculty and staff, and members of the Whittier College Board of Trustees gathered for a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the newly renovated Bewley preschool yard, officially named the Bewley Play Place, and to thank the donors who made the space possible: Dr. Maggie Koong, College Trustee and 2014 recipient of an honorary doctorate, and SoCal Industries, represented by Broadoaks parents, Rudy Lopez and Monica Varela.
The new yard was dedicated to Dr. Koong and her mother, Ting Yuk Chee, who has a long and notable history of philanthropy and professional work in early childhood education in Hong Kong and the People’s Republic of China.
The new yard features a large Alumawood covering with new fans and lights over the patio, new sandbox, and a variety of new educational materials. Thanks to the generosity of SoCal Industries, there’s a new security gate and safety wall with a flowery privacy screen all around the back and side of the preschool building.
Guests at the dedication also noticed that, thanks again to Dr. Koong, the preschool building has a new coat of stucco and has been repainted. Some replacement windows are on order. Dr. Koong’s donation to our school also funded the major renovation of the larger play yard, dedicated in 2015. What a remarkable difference these changes make!
Thank you to our donors for your support and for making a difference in the lives of our students as they enjoy playing and learning in the new beautiful outdoor spaces!
